Profits of the nation's 20 largest life and annuity insurers declined 84% in 2011, according to a new analysis by Weiss Ratings, a leading independent rating agency of U.S. insurance companies and financial institutions. While 17 of the 20 insurers had substantial declines, three reported improved financial performance in 2011: Hartford Life Insurance Company, Axa Equitable Life Insurance, and Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America.
