What's Right For Me: SSI or SSDI?

California Social Security Disability Lawyer
SSI vs. SSDI

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a benefit administered by the Social Security Administration for the benefit of disabled people who make little income and have limited financial resources. The current monthly SSI benefit in the state of California is $858, which is subject to periodic change and subject to various offsets.

A person may not receive SSI benefits if they have assets of more than $2,000 for a single person or $3000 for a couple. However, this asset cap does not include a home or an automobile.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is another program administered by the Social Security Administration for the benefit of disabled people. To be eligible for SSDI benefits, you must have a disability that has substantially affected your ability to work, for 12 months or more. The disability must be sufficient enough to be defined as a qualifying disability by the Social Security Administration.

To be eligible for SSDI benefits, you must have worked for a sufficient period of time and paid into Social Security. The amount of SSDI benefits you receive will depend on how much you have earned and how much you have paid into the system. Monthly SSDI benefits may range from $500 to $2000 or more, and you can receive an award for back pay for up to twelve months before the time of your filing.
