Cummins new ATC is the largest generator set testing facility of its kind in the world with an overall facility footprint of 23,000 square feet and a 13,000 square foot hemi-anechoic test chamber. Hemi-anechoic chambers have sound-absorbing acoustical treatment on the walls and ceiling, but they have hard floors with no acoustical treatment. The solid floor of the hemi-anechoic chamber is common for testing large and heavy equipment that is normally installed on a floor or other hard surface.

The ATC's capacity as well as cooling and air-handling capability allow testing of generator units from 1kW up to 3.3mW. It has expansion capability for units up to 4.4 mW. Standard measurements of 1 to 7 meters help meet U.S. and other global test standards. The chamber allows testing of Cummins vast array of products, including marine generators, and features availability of five different fuel types including: gasoline, diesel, propane, natural gas and JP8. Over 2,237 acoustical wedges, each five-foot long, absorb sound to maximize precise sound measurement.

Sound attenuation addressed on site can be difficult and expensive. The controlled environment (operational 24/7) and new capability allow the enhancement of design tools, improved data quality and faster and more efficient product development cycles. It allows Cummins to deliver more products to the market with the same amount of testing.

Every aspect of the ACT project reflects CPG's commitment to environmental performance. Moving from outside test slabs to an inside facility reduces noise emissions from the site. Acoustical screening around chillers, transformers and load banks keep sound well within city limits. The improved productivity is also good for the environment (a Cummins core value) because less fuel is burned in the development programs. Correspondingly, the ATC is also a LEED-designed facility so it is highly energy efficient.
