Our Ridiculous Approach to Retirement

401 (k)'s are NOT a retirement plan. That is why we need unionization & defined pension plans (a retirement system, such as the ASRS-AZ State Retirement System.) I realize that they are being destroyed everywhere & eliminated, and only public workers seem to have them, but a country with the wealth of the United States should invest in their citizens/occupants. They could divert the funds in their war chest, all that money spent on 2 wars, and take care of the retiring US population & provide healthcare for all within our borders. Other industrialized countries do - why not us?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/401%28k%29
Obviously, corporate America has a lot to do with the reason we don't. But if the middle east can get pissed off enough to depose dictators, we should be able to make necessary changes also. First, we need to stop buying into the for profit/corporate lie that it's up to us to make our own retirement by saving from substandard wages put into a 401 (k), or the equivalent, and gambled on the stock market. That is if you are even employed, since our unemployment rate is, what, 9% or more, depending on where you live. Those that are scrambling to provide for their basic needs (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs are probably not even thinking about retirement at the moment! Plus, the US does seem to be afflicted with more than its share of apathy and ignorance, ensured by Fox News and other corporately owned media.
Bottom line is we are stuck between a rock and a hard place in our current theology/thinking about retirement and it will take a strong movement, such as we saw in Wisconsin this past year, to stop the assaults on what we still have and progress to a place where defined retirement plans are once again the norm. Unionization of the workforce is key since unions negotiate pension plans during contract negotiations. It's time we changed our way of thinking and realized it's up to us to ensure our own future and that of future generations. Time to get active!
